Joel Parkinson looking to keep an open mind during 2012 ASP World Tour – Surfing News
Australian professional surfer Joel Parkinson plans on keeping an open mind during the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour due to the unpredictable nature of the World Title series.
In an interview with ASP World Tour’s official website, the 30-year-old Parkinson conceded that after finishing runner-up in the previous season of the elite tour, he would be feeling much more confident while kicking off his latest campaign for the coveted
ASP World Title. However, he would not let the results of the previous year fog his mind and keep his mind open.
“You can only take confidence out of finishing second in the world. A world title is still my goal and I’m still right in the mix, and finishing runner-up I should take a lot of confidence out of that going into this year. And anything could happen now –
that’s my attitude – anything could happen because it’s surfing after all,” said the 2011 ASP World Title series runner-up.
The Coolangatta-based surfer had been nothing short of spectacular throughout the 2011 season, putting on top-notch performances at the challenging surfing spots around the globe.
Despite competing against a large field of intimidating surfing talent, Parkinson managed to hold his own and collected a handful of good results during the year to eventually finish just behind America’s legendary Kelly Slater in the overall season standings.
The Australian surfer said that while the previous season of the ASP World Tour was great as far as his performance was concerned, he believes there is always a room for improvement. He had been putting in a lot of effort to groom his skills even further
and take his surfing to a new level.
Despite all the preparations that he is making for the upcoming elite tour, Parkinson has no intention of letting the coveted ASP World Title put him under pressure and will concentrate on enjoying his surfing and offering a good challenge.
“It’s not like I’m going in totally unprepared – I’ve been doing a lot of work on my surfing – but I’m going into 2012 with an open mind,” conceded Parkinson.
The 2012 ASP World Tour is scheduled to kick off with Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia, from February 25.
