Joel Parkinson moves into quarter-final at Rio de Janeiro: 2011 Billabong Rio Pro
Joel Parkinson of Australia beat his compatriot, Kieren Perrow, and French Jeremy Flores to clinch the third and fourth round vital heats at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil today at 2011 Billabong Rio Pro.
Due to this amazing and versatile performance in surfing, Parkinson has confirmed his place for the quarter-final.
In the third round, Parkinson clinched the fifth heat with the highest score of 15.07 (out of 20), while Kieren Perrow of Australia was thrown out of the third round of the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro with a very little score of 7.83 in the following heat.
“It’s kind of one of those things where you’re only as good as your last heat and once you have a shocker you don’t want to have another one,” Parkinson said. “It might have been a blessing in disguise (to lose in Round 1). I’m glad I got that one out of the way and my strategy is good and I feel good,” said Parkinson.
Meanwhile, Kelly Slater has been eliminated from the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro after losing the sixth heat in the third round against Bobby Martinez at Rio de Janeiro today. Martinez won the following heat with a score of 14.50 to 14.10.
The great news for the Aussie surfer Joel Parkinson is that he has jumped into the number one spot in the ASP World Title Rankings after the early elimination of Kelly Slater from the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro in Brazil.
“It’s too early to think about this early in the year. It’s only the third event of the year to start worrying about it (the ASP World Title). If it was later on in the season, then sure, but as of now, who knows what can happen,” said Parkinson.
He won the second heat of the fourth round with a sterling score of 17.23. Meanwhile, Jeremy Flores of France settled second with a score of 16.53 and American Bobby Martinez wound up third with a total score of 10.73 in the following heat.
