Joel Parkinson worried about light offshore winds when Volcom Fiji Pro resumes at Cloudbreak
The possibility of light offshore and onshore winds accompanying the massive, long-period swell approaching Cloudbreak on Friday is becoming a point of concern for Australian professional surfer Joel Parkinson.
In an interview published on his official website joelparko.com, the 31-year-old Queensland-based surfer voiced his concern about how the variables could lead to offshore and a bit of onshore winds, which would make it pretty demanding to tame the massive
swell, which is expected to lie somewhere in the 12-point range.
“I think there’s a few waves coming. It’s massive at home. I don’t know how big it’s going to be but the only thing that worries me is the wind, we haven’t really had any tradewinds since we’ve been here. Light and variables could mean light offshore and
could mean a bit of onshore too. There’s nothing worse than perfect swell with a light onshore,” conceded Parkinson.
The 2011 ASP World Runner-Up and current No.1 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Title rankings has been exhibited a solid form since the start of the season. Establishing himself as one of the strongest contenders for the most prestigious honours in surfing,
Parkinson’s performance in Fiji is of immense important as a good result will allow him to further cement his place on the top of the rankings and thus move him closer to the coveted ASP World Title.
Parkinson got just the start that he was hoping for at Volcom Fiji Pro, the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour. Pitted against the Brazilian powerhouse Raoni Monteiro and Fiji’s Isei Tokovu, the Australian phenom navigated his way
through the six-to-eight foot waves and managed to get hold of a couple of good waves to eventually seal the fate of the heat in his favour. The victory carried him directly into the third round, becoming one of the few surfers to have eluded relegation into
Round 2.
The latest stop on the elite tour has been in a state of hold for the past three days due to unfavourable surfing conditions prevailing at the main venue of Cloudbreak. However, there are strong chances that the competition will resume with the remaining
heats of Round 2 on Friday.
