Joel Peralta and Tampa Bay Rays agree to two year $6 million deal – MLB Update

Joel Peralta had a decent time with the Tampa Bay Rays last season. The set up man wanted to return to the Rays and according to sources the team also wanted to resign him. After having discussions for more than a week, the Rays and Peralta finally agreed
to a deal on a Monday, subject to a medical check.
The $6 million two year deal with a 2015 option for $2.5 million is bound to please Peralta, who saw New York as the best landing spot. The 36-year-old has been a key element in Rays’ pitching rotation over the past couple of years. Not only is he reliable
and durable, Peralta also has the ability to up his game under pressure.
"Some teams offered a little bit more money, but I got what I thought I was worth and I was happy with it," Peralta told the Times from the Dominican Republic. "I didn't want to go anywhere else."
Perhaps, that is the reason the Yankees were desperate to bring him back. Peralta has made the most American League appearances with 147 over the last two years, going 5-10 with 3.27 ERA and eight saves. Overall, he gave up just 93 hits and 35 in 1342 innings,
showing the stuff he is capable of. He was also suspended by the umpires after he was caught with pine tar in his glove on June 19.
Rays also contacted closer Fernando Rodney making a qualifying offer of $2.5 million. It seems the Rays are doing everything they can to keep the same rotation. The management has also planned talks with left J.P. Howell and right hander Kyle Farnsworth.
It will be interesting to see if the pitching rotations can give consistent results in the next season to help the Rays claim the American League East Division title.
Meanwhile, Rays’ starting pitcher David Price received the Players Choice Award as the leagues’ Outstanding Pitcher. Price produced some magical performances in 2012, finished with an excellent 2.56 ERA and shared the American League lead with 20 wins. Price
has won this Award on one previous occasion in 2010.
