Joel Sjöholm and Gary Boyd have clear goals in front of them at the UBS Hong Kong Open
With two European Tour events being played simultaneously this week, a number of players have set their sights on making it into the top-60 in The Race to Dubai.
The two tournaments include the SA Open Championship and the UBS Hong Kong Open. At the end of the week, the top-60 players in the list will receive invitations to play in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
Joel Sjöholm made a strong start to his campaign at the Hong Kong Golf Club, in a bid to climb five places in the European Tour’s money list.
He currently ranks 65th in the standings and desperately needs a top-nine finish this week, in order to make it into the season finale, to be held at the Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The Swede carded a total of seven birdies against four bogeys to take the share of the ninth place, entering the second round in Hong Kong.
He now needs to keep the momentum going into the remaining three rounds, in order to keep his name among the top-nine players on the leaderboard.
“I don’t normally watch that much golf when I’m home, but I watched quite a lot because I so badly want to get into Dubai next week, so I needed to know what everyone else was doing,” he said.
He added, “There are so many great guys out here and I don’t wish badly on anyone, but sometimes you have to be egotistical and selfish and just hope that you climb above other people”.
“If I can finish in the top 60, I’ve got a great chance of earning some big money next week and then playing in more tournaments next season”.
Gary Boyd, in the meantime, is trying to secure his place among the top-119 in The Race to Dubai.
According to the European Tour’s policy, the top-119 players this year will be allowed to retain their cards for the 2013 season.
Currently, the Englishman looks to move on the right track, as he carded a two-under par 68 in the opening round to mark a decent start to his campaign at the Hong Kong Golf Club.
