Joey Abell: Fres Oquendo is a fast pugilist who can knock you out in an instant – Boxing News
Joey Abell, the surging American heavyweight, put forth the media his thoughts about Fres Oquendo, his upcoming opponent, and commented that Fres is a sneaky and fast pugilist and he is only concerned about Oquendo’s swift hooks that can easily knock you
out in an instant.
Joey and Fres will headline the Friday night pay-per-view brought together by Bobby Hitz of Hitz Entertainment. The duo will collide with each other in a 10-round bout with vacant WBA Fedelatin heavyweight title up for grabs.
Interestingly, this is the second time that Joey is entering in a title bout unlike Fres who has held many titles round his waist throughout his career. The event will be televised live on May 25, 2012 and the ring will be set up at Horseshoe Casino situated
in Hammond, Indiana, United States.
The extravaganza will be co-headlined by the non-title six-round bout between Elijah McCall and Stanley Allen. Fres and Joey share a pretty good history as they both have sparred together in the same ring.
In fact, it was Oquendo who trained and sparred with Joey during his preparation for the Chris Arreola bout. It is this facet which makes the clash more interesting altogether since both men are very well aware of each other’s stance and brawling style.
Fres, 39, has been in a total 40 bouts and emerged victorious in 33. He has nailed 21 opponents by knockout and is coming from a win over Travis Fulton.
Joey, on the other hand, has been in a total 35 bouts and boasts 28 wins. The 31-year-old Abell, also known as the ‘Minnesota Ice’, possesses a pretty intimidating knockout ratio as he has collected 27 of his total wins by knocking the opponents out cold.
During the media interaction, Joey shared in detail about his upcoming opponent’s qualities and his game plan. Abell stated, “Fres is sneaky as a fighter and very fast. I’m not necessarily worried about his power, as far as hitting me and getting me in trouble,
but anybody as quick as he is can knock you out with a punch you don’t see coming. But I think I’m just a smarter fighter.”
While revealing his game plan, Joey commented that he will not just rely on grabbing a knockout win adding that he will strive hard to collect a unanimous win as Fres has a pretty decent chin and powerful defence.
Only the initial rounds will tell as to who has the upper hand since both men are competent and are of equal calibre. If Fres has a slight experience advantage then on the other hand Joey possesses the height and therefore the reach benefit. But everything
depends heavily on as to how the belligerents capitalise their advantages.
