Olympique de Marseille have completed the signing of England international, Joey Barton from Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 on a season-long loan. The midfielder signed a contract last night and is now officially a Marseille player.
After signing a contract with the Rhone outfit, the soon-to-be 30-year-old midfielder agreed to talk to some journalists who were eager to listen to what the new Marseille signing had to say about the club.
Barton spoke about the Champions League encounter between http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and Marseille back in 2007. The game was played at Anfield and Mathieu Valbuena’s screamer secured three points for Didier Deschamps’ side. And, Barton was there to witness the emotions
of the Marseille fans.
“I remember the Champions League game and Valbuena’s goal. They put a nice atmosphere. I was in town at about one o’clock in the afternoon and they were already singing. However, the kickoff was at 20:45. I thought they would have no voice when they arrived
at the stadium. But they sang all night.”
Barton then went on to compare Marseille fans to those of his former club Newcastle United. Barton says that it was this particular memory which led him to favour a transfer to OM.
The former Manchester City player admitted that he was approached by Fenerbahce and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863 but he was more inclined towards making a move to Marseille as the club has a good challenge in its hands. Barton says that although his new team is the underdog,
Marseille can surprise Ligue 1 fans.
His 12-game suspension means that Barton will miss a lot of the action of the first half of the campaign. However, the player has said that he has done a few stupid things in his career.
“With my 12-game suspension, everyone said, ‘Let him go, he is a good player but he is crazy.’ People underestimate me. I was in prison. When I came out, people did not say that I am a bad player, but I was crazy. It’s difficult for me. OK, it’s true I did
stupid things. But I am 30-years-old and I may have been involved in 5 or 6 incidents. I was either drunk or lasted in the filed a minute or two.”
Indeed, Marseille fans may still see a man who is capable of flipping out anytime.
