Joey Hernandez collects impressive fourth round knockout win over Brandon Baue – Boxing News
Joey Hernandez, the WBC United States (USNBC) light middleweight champion, successfully defended his title and knocked out Brandon Baue, the World Boxing Foundation All Americas welterweight champion, in the fourth round of the 10-round bout held on June
23, 2012.
The duo met on the fight card headlined by the vacant NABF heavyweight title bout between Tony Grano and DaVarryl Williamson. The showdown was organised and promoted by renowned Don King of Don King Productions.
The Saturday night extravaganza also witnessed Angelo Santana take on Justin Savi in a non-title 10-round bout, co-headlining the fight card. Joey, 27, was entering his career’s 24th bout, boasting 21 wins.
The young Florida lad has lost just one bout in his whole career to Ed Paredes and since then was on a six-bout win streak. Even before the bout, a glance at resume of both men clearly exhibited a one-sided scenario.
Brandon, Joey’s Saturday night opponent was entering his career’s 19th bout, collecting just 12 wins. In addition to being overshadowed by Joey’s experience, Brandon also exhibited a seriously tarnished or somewhat below par win ratio.
Baue’s only facet that might be considered a decent one was his 10 knockout wins compared to Joey’s 13. From the very beginning of the bout, it was Joey who set the pace in an authoritative manner.
During the whole bout, not for a split second did Hernandez allow his opponent to overwhelm him. Also known as ‘Twinkle Fingers’, Joey used the outside in strategy and targeted Brandon’s body and face.
The second round can be dubbed as the decisive one as Hernandez was able to connect his powerful left hook to Brandon’s jaw several times. The battering inflicted significant damage so much so that Missouri lad’s right eye got swollen.
During the fourth round, Joey after realising that Brandon has softened moved in with a wave of powerful jabs stunning Baue and eventually flattening him on the ring floor. Though Brandon stood up yet this became his biggest mistake as Joey received him
with another barrage of jabs.
At one minute and 11 seconds, the referee halted the bout in order to save ‘The Business’ Brandon. After the emphatic win, Joey stated, “I was a little flat in the beginning but I found my groove quickly. A lot of people tell me I look a lot like Victor
Ortiz but I sure have bigger balls than he does. I heard he quit on his stool tonight in Los Angeles. Now Canelo Alvarez needs an opponent, so if he wants to fight a young lion, I’m here in Miami. I’m calling out all the junior middleweights.”
Joey now has 22 wins in his gear whereas Brandon has unfortunately collected his fourth consecutive loss.
