Joey Votto’s decisive RBI helps St. Louis Cardinals rout Cincinnati Reds, 6-5 – MLB Update
Cincinnati Reds’ first baseman, Joey Votto was outstanding with his bat as he hit a final RBI to go-ahead of the Reds with a 6-5 win against the St. Louis Cardinals, at the Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, on May 13.
Votto went 2-for-5 with the bat. While speaking of his game tactics and the Cardinals’ reliever, Jason Motte, Votto said, “He's a guy that a lot of guys will strike out against. I had two strikes against me, so I was really fighting. I had to fight. I got
a pretty good pitch to hit late in the at-bat.”
Pitchers from both teams threw really well in the first three innings as they did not give a single run. The Cardinals led-off with 3-0 in the fourth inning, when Colby Rasmus doubled on the drive of Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday reached at the third base
to complete one run. The score-card was unmoved until the fifth inning. Then Pujols, singled-off the left-field to add one run for the Cardinals in the sixth inning.
Jay Bruce hit an RBI single and posted a run on the double of Scott Rolen to lessen their trail. The Cardinals were leading with 4-2 at the end of sixth inning. Yadier Molina singled-off the left-centre position to lead his team. On the other hand, Edgar
Renteria hit two RBIs single against the Cardinals’ reliever, Miguel Batista to cut-off their deficit to 5-4, at the end of seventh inning.
The eighth inning went score-less for both sides. Brandon Phillips tied the game with 5-all in the ninth inning by hitting an RBI single towards the centre-field spot. An additional inning was given to break the tie runs. The Reds went ahead in the 10th
inning with 6-5, when Votto took an RBI single off Motte to seal the game.
Reds’ Manager, Dusty Baker, was pleased with the performance of his team and said, “It's like gaining two games. Instead of being 2½ out, we're only a half-game out. If that's any indication of what's coming up, it's going to be exciting.”
The Reds have won the first encounter in the three-game series. They did not have a satisfied Win-Loss record against the Cardinals in the past, as they went 6-12 down in the last season. This time though, the Reds have started pretty well and will be looking
to clinch the series in style.
