Joey Votto’s double RBIs help Cincinnati Reds defeat Chicago Cubs 4-2 - MLB Update

Cincinnati Reds’ first baseman, Joey Votto had a brilliant day with the bat as he went 2-for-6 with an average of .316 and hit two RBIs including two runs in the Reds’ 4-2 win against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Chicago on September 6.
In the first five innings, both teams were score-less as the pitchers threw perfectly. Jay Bruce walked and Dave Sappelt doubled to deep left-centre during first inning but at centre-field, Brandon Phillips and Miguel Cairo both flied out and Votto struck-out
without contributing any run. Similarly, Darwin Barney and Aramis Ramirez both struck-out swinging while at centre-field Starlin Castro lined out without providing any run to the Cubs.
Reds were powerless in the second inning as Chris Valaika walked but Todd Frazier popped out to short-stop position. At the bottom of third inning, Geovany Soto popped out to first base while Rodrigo Lopez and Tyler Colvin both grounded out to the catcher
without scoring runs. The batters were struck-out in the fifth inning.
During sixth inning, Reds got off the mark by taking a couple of runs and got a 2-0 lead. Sappelt posted one run when Votto hit a double-run shot to deep right-field. The second run was taken by Votto when Devin Mesoraco hit a grounder into double play,
short-stop to second base and second to first base. Later on, Bruce got out to second base without adding more runs.
The pitchers executed pretty well in the seventh and eighth inning to limit the scoring shots. Reds’ starter, Mike Leake pitched his nine innings with an ERA of 4.00 and gave up just two runs, three hits, one homer and two earned runs on his 91 pitches.
He was able to strike-out six batters in his respective pitched innings.
In the ninth inning, Cubs added two runs to tie the game 2-2. Bryan LaHair hit a two-run homer (397 feet) to right-field and Castro scored a tie run for the Cubs. Then, at the top of 13th inning, Reds’ batters took two runs to get a 4-2 lead.
Sappelt posted a tie-breaking run when Votto hit a double-run shot to deep right-field.
The last run for the Reds was taken by Votto when Cairo singled off centre-field and then moved to second base on a throwing error. As a result, Reds were able to level the three-game series 1-1 at Chicago.
