I started walking three years ago. i quit smoking and went to a faster pace walk. This year i started running. I love it but it hurts my knees. I stretech before and after but it doesnt help. My knees just hurt , even at a slow pace. I wear running shoes ( New Balance) It only hurts while running. When i am done there is no pain like when i run. Why is this?

I really dont feel like i can get the excercise i want anymore from walking. And i do not want to double the walking to make up for running. I do not have the time with kids schedules. I do 35 minutes a day 5 days a week.

  1. smoking can usually cut off circulation in your veins which might lead to weakness in legs and then amputation. I doubt thats the case though. I also get like that even though I am a great runner. It happens if you pulled a muscle or if you didnt strech out enough. You'll get used to it.

  2. maybe you should try low impact exercises. try out an elliptical machine at the gym. They work great!

  3. Pain in the knees when jogging depends on the type of running shoe, the type of floor, the position u take to run, the weight, and it is important for u to go to the doctor, because some people cannot run, but can do other aerobic exercises. Good luck!

  4. You might have the wrong type of shoe, or your way of running is destructive.

It also sounds like you might a patellae alignment issue. Im kinda having similar expiriences like yours. What I think is happening is that one of the muscles around your knee-cap is soo well developed from all the running your doing that its pulling on your knee-cap, and causing it go out of alignment. So instead of resting in the depression between your upper and lower leg at the joint its being pulled to the sides or upward and causing the knee-cap to press/ grind against one of the bones thus the pain your feeling.

A good indicator of this is if the pain feels like its coming from under the kneecap or somewhere deep inside the joint.

I advise you go see a doctor /bone or knee specialist for X-Rays it could be worse. Anyway my doctor told me to stop anykind of excercise activity involving my legs for about a month to see what happens. Im two weeks into it and my knees feel great again.

The next time i run im going to make sure I land my foot properly instead if to the side. I realise that part of the problem is my running techneque and the way my legs bend with each step.

  5. Try swimming its one of the lowest impact sports on your body and is a better work out using all your muscles with greater calorie burn.

  6. i'm guessing since you have kids, you probably have a family doctor. you should go see him/her about this -don't ask random people on the internet if its really serious! ^.^

  7. well if you are running on the cement it is not as absorbant as the  grass so your knees might be absorbing a lot of shock considering your run 5 times a week which is good ^^ or it could be that your are developing arthritis in your knees which is bad =[

  8. Sine you mentioned that your running for only a year now, i would suggest  slow it down for couple weeks and then get back to your routine to see if you recovered, I would love to me helpful if would include your age ,gender , hight and weight.

  9. Your getting older.

Your bones and muscles arent as good as they used to be,

  10. running on hard ground hurts the leg... trust me. im a xcountry runner. i advise you to run on a field or on soft ground.  I hurt my knee while running too hard. and im still very young. it has nothing to do with your age. don't worry. imagine hitting ur head on the ground and hitting it on da field. which is more pain? hope this helped. =]
