Johan Cruyff denies making racist comments about Edgar Davids – Dutch Eredivisie news
Johan Cruyff, former player and manager of Ajax Amsterdam and Barcelona, has denied making racist comments about another illustrious former footballer and member of the club management, Edgar Davids.
The 64-year-old reportedly said at a meeting earlier this year that ‘Davids’ skin colour was the only reason for his appointment on the board.
However, in his column in Tuesday’s edition of Dutch daily, De Telegraaf, the legendary footballer has denied making any racist comments. He described his comment in his column as:
“Ajax is a multi-cultural club and we have found that many talented immigrant players quit when they reach puberty. We wanted to tackle this problem with someone from the same background, who had come through it. And that was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Edgar-c11882 Davids”.
He added that Davids’ skin colour had nothing to do with the comments he had made, only his role at the club had.
“During one of our fights I pointed that out to him. But it had nothing to do with his skin colour”, Cruyff added.
Davids clearly stated on his blog that he never wanted to emphasize that Cruyff is a racist.
“I never said, and I want to emphasise that, that Johan Cruyff was a racist, despite this unfortunate remark on his part”, the 38-year-old said.
Cruyff, who was appointed earlier this year as the member of Ajax board of directors, is currently involved in a bitter dispute with four other members of the Ajax supervisory board. The decision to appoint Louis van Gaal as the club director hasn't gone
down well with him either.
Since the 64-year-old’s appointment, the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 star has installed Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk to help nurture the talented youngsters at Ajax's fabled youth academy, Jong Ajax.
Reports confirm that the club members will decide at a meeting next week whether to support Cruyff or the four other members. Should the 64-year-old be forced to leave his position at the Amsterdammers, Bergkamp and Jonk could join hands with the legendary
footballer and leave their posts, too.
Nonetheless, only time will tell the tale whether the disputes at Amsterdam Arena conclude in a disappointing manner or the rows are resolved effectively by the club members.
