Johan Santana looking to bounce back in 2012 – MLB Spring Training News
Johan Santana is one of the most exciting pitchers in Major League Baseball right now. The left handed pitcher looked on top of his game play in his first spring training appearance against St. Louis Cardinals. Throwing 29 pitches, he made the most of available opportunities. It will be interesting to see if his body can respond in the days to come.
The starter made his MLB debut in 2007 and he has produced magical performances since then. He moved to New York in 2008 but failed to live to his immense potential. Santana missed almost the entire 2011 season due to a shoulder injury and there were rumours that his best days were behind him.
However, Santana showed great determination, fighting spirit and mental strength to bounce back from such a nasty injury. He pitched with great control and accuracy on Tuesday to announce his comeback in great style.
“I have to do it consistently. Six, seven innings, and then how do I feel to do it again five days later. That’s the test. For me, it's a day-to-day thing," Santana said. "And every time I go through everything, it's a day closer to being back, so it's definitely good for me."
"We worked hard," he added. "We're trying to work my way back and to be where we used to be, and I always throw my bullpens with intensity. Being able to do it right now is great. I'm getting back to where I used to be."
With a decent 11-9 win-loss record and a phenomenal 2.98 ERA, Santana delivered the goods on consistent basis in 2010. However, health and fitness related issues always halted his progress. In September 2010, the Mets made an announcement that the pitcher is likely to miss the first half of 2011 season to recover from his shoulder injury but that did not turn out to be the case.
The 2012 season is going to be very crucial for Santana. He is looking focused and confident. Mets’ fans also have great respect for Santana and they will be hoping he stays healthy throughout the season to change the course of his career.
