Johan Santana ready to start on Sunday as he recovers from right ankle injury - MLB Update
Left hand pitcher Johan Santana is set to start on Sunday after getting rid of a right ankle injury.
Before the All-Star break, he had twisted his ankle due to an accident on first-base. It had seen his ankle being burdened by the weight of the Chicago Cubs’ Reed Johnson. As a result, it was feared that he may not return any time soon.
On the rotation which features the likes of R.A. Dickey and Jon Niese, Santana holds distinct significance. Against the backdrop of incredible laurels that he has achieved in his career, the Mets consider him an important part of their expedition this year.
So far in the season his performance has been subpar compared to his standard. However, in the second half, he may turn out to be the most reliable for the club. Furthermore, he may help the club claim the second position on the table, which is currently
occupied by the Atlanta Braves.
Furthermore, his role in the rotation has grown even more significant in light of the fact that the starting pitcher Dillon Gee has been reported injured. Gee is unlikely to play the second half of the season and this calls for his replacement.
For Santana, this can easily be a time to realise that his contribution has to be more compelling now. Anything lacking from other pitchers has to be compensated with solid shows by him on the mound.
Meanwhile, Santana discusses his progress regarding the rehabilitation from his sprained ankle. He is of the view that he can even throw Friday.
As far as he is concerned, he is ready to start throwing as soon as possible, but the fact doctors have recommended that he should take some time, the management has decided to bring him on Sunday.
“I told these guys I would have pitched [tonight], but the doctor told us that they want me to take an extra couple of days and just give it a break,” Santana said. “It was sore the day after, but it was manageable.”
On return, Santana will be looking to put aside all that has happened in the first half and try to be consistent in the second half of the regular season.
