Johan Santana will be employed with care by New York Mets as he is set to start on Saturday-MLB
Johan Santana will start against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, August 11. The starter has recovered from the sprained ankle now and his rehabilitation has followed a bullpen session by him on Wednesday, in which he threw impeccable pitches.
Therefore, the New York Mets manager Terry Collins is extremely hopeful that Santana will carry out the starting job on Saturday tremendously well.
Santana has been the most relied upon hurler by the Mets in the past.
As he entered into this season, the pitcher that the management believed will keep the team in contention while the rest of the players experience decline was Santana.
Therefore, when he sustained an ankle injury earlier, it was taken as a setback by the management and the team's chances for making it through the post-season reduced dramatically as a result. As a response to this reality, the Mets had to call up their
rookie Matt Harvey from the Minor League.
As Santana is ready to throw now, team officials are concerned about his injury prone body. In this regard, the manager Collins has stated that Santana will be used sparingly late in the season, in particular during the month of September Santana’s task
as a starter will be curtailed significantly.
Furthermore, Collins desires to see Santana leaving the season fully fit as opposed to lingering with some injury. Collins does not want to face the reality of finding his ace out during an upcoming Spring Training.
"We have to be very cautious in the month of September to make sure he goes into the off-season feeling good," Collins said. "If that means we have to somehow give him an extra day now and then, figure out a way to do it, we'll do it. I don't want to go
into next spring training trying to find out if Johan Santana is going to be healthy. We have to go into the off-season knowing he is."
Meanwhile, Santana will be excited for his first start after recovery. While he has been unable to record many wins in the season so far, he will look to start a new expedition now.
He will be making sure he improves his dismal win-loss record in the season.
