Johanne Remaneses and Keith Lyn Cruz shine in 2011 METTA National Open Cup: Table Tennis News
The third Metropolitan Table Tennis Association (METTA) Cup National Open Championship 2011 was held at Ninoy Aquino Stadium located in Manila, Philippines. The tile of the non-rank singles category went to Johanne Remaneses and Keith Lyn Cruz. The tournament started on May 20 and will conclude on May 21.
The championship is one of the most prominent table tennis events in the country. In the non-ranking players category, Johanne Remaneses won over Naire Glendo from Huaching, in straight games with a score-line of 11-8, 11-5 and 11-6. His back spins and rallies were remarkable during the match.
Remaneses on his victory said, “I just sustained my rhythm and it’s really great to win a title here.”
Keith Lyn Cruz from the College of Saint Benilde won against Jaezl Ingeniero from University of the East in a match of four games with a score-line of 11-9, 10-12, 11-7 and 11-6. She clinched the title of the non-ranking women's players.
There were matches played for other categories, the Men's 40-and-under division title was won by Lauro Crisostomo from De La Salle University. He defeated Noel Gonzales from Far Eastern University in the final hurdle in straight games scoring 11-7, 11-9 and 11-8.
In the Men’s 50-and-under category it was Mansueto Villar from Amoranto’s who won over Peter Lim in straight games with score line of 11-9, 11-6 and 11-6.
In the boy’s 12-and-under classes the title was won by Jomari Ingeniero, who defeated Raymon Gerona in straight games with a score-line of 11-6, 11-5 and 11-8. In the girls 12-and-under classes Krisha Jade Pelaez took down Celina Vasquez in straight games with a match score of 11-9, 11-5 and 11-5.
In the non-ranking team event the Lopue’s Table Tennis Association of Bacolod defeated the team of Huaching-Donic in straight matches 3-0.
The finals of the men's and women's non-ranking players will be contested today. Table tennis is not considered as major sport in the country. Such national events are providing a base for the upcoming players to excel in the sport. They are also providing them a base to learn the sport and to develop the sport from grass-root level in the country.
