John Bond met with FBI regarding Cam Newton
The attorney for John Bond, Phil Abernethy stated in an email to ESPN that his client has undergone an interview with the FBI regarding accusations that were made claiming Auburn Tigers star quarterback Cam Newton’s father, Cecil Newton asked Mississippi
State for money in exchange for a letter of intent.
Bond is said to have been asked by former team-mate Kenny Rogers to contribute money in order to pay Cecil Newton for Cam’s commitment to Mississippi State. Abernethy said that Bond met with investigators from both the FBI and the state on Tuesday 16 November
and fully co-operated.
Bond claims that Rogers asked him for $180,000 in the hopes that Mississippi State would be able to raise the money to get Cam Newton to commit to the school. Bond says he refused to contribute any money and Rogers was forced to seek the funds elsewhere.
The accusations began when Rogers recently came out stating that Cecil asked him for anywhere between $100,000 and $180,000 in exchange for a letter of commitment from his son. Rogers proceeded to then ask Bond for the cash, and after Bond refused, asked
Bill Bell, who also promptly refused.
Auburn contends that Newton is an eligible student, but have refused to comment any further. This, after allegations surfaced that Newton called Rogers upset because he was unable to commit to Mississippi State because his father said the money from Auburn
was too good.
Rogers denies talking with Bond and Bell, however both men have clearly stated that they received calls from Rogers regarding funds that were to be paid to Cecil Newton.
The issue has come under investigation from the state, the FBI and the NCAA.
Newton is still considered eligible and was in the Tigers line-up when they played the Georgia Bulldogs in week 11.
