John Daly confirms to participate in the Irish Open – Golf News
The two-time major winner John Daly has been added to the published field of the Irish Open, scheduled at the Royal Portrush Golf Club, Northern Ireland from June 28 to July 1, 2012.
Daly will participate in the event on sponsor’s invitation to contend against some of the local golf stars including Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy.
Daly will be making his fifth appearance in the tournament. His overall record at the tournament is mixed with some good finishes and missed cuts.
His best performance in the tournament came in his first year of participation when he stood runner-up in 1996. On the contrary, he missed the cut in 2009, his last appearance in the tournament.
For the last few months, Daly has been trying really hard to get to the top of the leaderboard in each of the European Tour event he plays.
He took the fourth spot in the Commercialbank Qatar Masters presented by Dolphin Energy, his first tournament of the 2012 European Tour season.
Sicilian Open was the last tournament that witnessed him in action and he finished 11th on the leaderboard after carding an eight-under par tournament score.
During the Avantha Masters in India, he also suffered an elbow injury that forced him to stay out of the game for a few weeks.
"My elbow was very swollen and hurting really bad for about a week after playing in India," Daly said after he returned back to action in the European Tour’s Hassan II Trophy. "I went and visited a doctor in Tampa who gave me a cortisone injection the Sunday
before the Transitions Championship," he said.
Prior to playing the Hassan II Trophy, he also participated in the PGA Tour’s Transitions Championship where he tied for the 51st position after carding a two-under par tournament score.
He is now completely fit and ready to make a good run in the Irish Open. He believes that he can repeat the same performance he gave in his first appearance in the tournament.
However, he just wants to improve his record by one position up as compared to the past, which will also help him register the first win of the 2012 golf season.
