John Daly makes a strong start at the US PGA Championship
The veteran John Daly had a pretty good start at the Ocean Course. The senior pro fired four-under 68 in the first round. His fast start was a surprise to many but not to him.
Daily believes that this performance was coming, he just needed his rhythm and he got that last week at the Reno Tahoe Open.
At Reno Tahoe, the fifth place finish meant that it was his best finish on the PGA Tour, since losing to Tiger Woods in a playoff back in 2005.
"I think it's kind of been building up for the last five or six weeks," Daly said.
Since 2009, it was Daily’s best start at the PGA Championship. Things are looking nice and smooth for him. John is acting like a mature golfer.
He said that he shall not be too happy about his performance because there are three more rounds still to go.
"I do not want to get too up or too down about it," Daly said. "It is just the first round. But I like where I am at, and I like the way I am playing. I like the way I am feeling".
However, there was a surprise leader at the top, the Swedish number one, Carl Pettersson. Carl shot a magnificent 6-under 66 to lead the championship by one stroke after first round.
The Australian duo of Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy also made impressive starts. Adam showed no signs of The Open hangover, as he and his fellow countrymen shot four-under 68.
Both of them had flawless first rounds. Adam especially, once again, was very impressive. His short game and his putting were simply sublime.
Since his transition to the long putters, his game has really changed. He seems more confident while making putts and his results have improved as well.
Tiger Woods, chasing the elusive target of most number of major wins, also had a decent start to the event. He shot three-under 69 in the first round at Kiawah Island.
Tiger is currently four majors behind Jack Nicklaus and a win here would be a big step towards achieving this target.
