John Daly makes the cut at the Transitions Championship – Golf News
John Daly, despite making five bogeys in his second round of the Transitions Championship, successfully made the cut, as he finished in a 23-way tie for the 55th at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida.
The Transitions offered the cut line for the top 55 and tiers to play the final 36 holes of the event. Therefore, Daly did not have any further chance of making another bogey in his second round.
Daly started off on the back-nine of the course, while recording a bogey-birdie-bogey on the first three holes.
Later he recovered on the par-five 14th and par-three 15th with two consecutive birdies. Yet, he failed again on the very next hole and made another bogey.
The worst thing happened when he was playing his last two holes to move from under par score to over par with another two bogeys to end his round.
This is his second cut among his seven appearances at the Copperhead Course. He last made the cut in 2010 when he finished tied for the 55th position.
"(Friday) was the first day that it's been great since I got the shot on Sunday," Daly, 45, said. "(Thursday) I was about two clubs short of what I normally am. (Friday) it was about one club. It's getting better".
According to Daly, he was not sure about making the cut, as he failed to play good golf on Friday. Therefore, making it at the cut line was a sigh of relief for him.
"It was scary," he said. "I hated missing Puerto Rico (last week). It killed me not to play there".
He added, "But I was going to play here. This is my hometown now. But there was a slight chance. I was getting worried".
Meanwhile, Jason Dufner took the midway lead in the tournament after scoring another five-under par 66. He managed a similar score in the opening round on Thursday.
The overnight leader, Padraig Harrington, faltered in the second round and carded two-over par 73 to slip down to share second spot with William McGirt.
McGirt scored three under par to finish at an eight-under par overall score.
