John Daly shifts into a reverse gear and signs up for the Mylan Classic on a Nationwide tour
While most of the golfers on the PGA Tour are thrown into stiff competition for obvious reasons of trying to compete and excel in their trade, John Daly, the two-time major winner, seems to be following his own discreet agenda on the tour, for all the illogical
reasons.
Daly is always there on the field of almost every PGA Tour event and even manages to squeeze a spot for himself on the European Tour events through sponsor’s exemptions and has now decided to shift into reverse gears and has signed up for the Mylan Classic
on the Nationwide Tour.
Nationwide Tour which works as a qualifying tour for the mainstream PGA Tour, is contested among the young guns of the sport and was once a happy hunting ground for the burly Daly a few decades back. Daly used to play on the Ben Hogan Tour in the Pittsburg
area and will be returning at the Southpointe Golf Club to revive his lackluster form after failing to play at the FedExCup Playoffs events this month.
Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship and also won the Open Championship in 1995, has not won a single event since 2004 where he won the Torrey Pine event. Daly does not have a playing status on the PGA Tour and relies on sponsor’s exemption to make it into
the field of mainstream professional events.
Apparently, Daly will not be the only veteran player who will be switching back to Nationwide Tour next week. A six-time PGA Tour winner Rocco Mediate will also be making a comeback to the honour the Nationwide field with his presence. Mediate played at
the inaugural Mylan Classic last year and will be hoping to bag the title this time around.
Unlike Daly, Mediate seems to be in a better touch with his sport as he won the Frys.com Open last year, which constitutes as one of the four events on the Fall Series. He failed to make the cut at the starting event at the Southpointe Golf Club.
The long-hitting Daly who has a long history of a troubled life, relies on his meager income from his otherwise rare top high profile finishes in the events. Daly pulled in a rare Top-10 finish at the Canadian Open which was one of the most difficult courses
on the tour so far for the year.
The burly golfer has faced a troubled life with several failed marriages and has spent a huge sum of his income trying to bail himself out of illegal gambling addiction. Major chunk of his income went to settle hefty marriage lawsuits and has suffered a
battered form crisis for the last six years.
The once grizzled veteran on the PGA Tour will be facing tough competitors on the Nationwide circuit which has grown in leaps and bounds since the times Daly used to play on the turf.
