John Deere Classic: Luke Guthrie record top-10 finish in his second PGA Tour start
Luke Guthrie, a rookie on the PGA Tour, posted a stunning seven-under par 64 on Sunday, the best of the day, to tie for the fifth position at the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run.
It was an amazing display of the game considering the fact that it was the only second PGA Tour event of his career. Last month, he tied for the 19th position when he made his debut at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.
“Starting at the St. Jude, that was my first start. Gained some valuable experience,” he said. “Got to play in the last couple groups on Sunday. Didn't play my best, but just learning experiences. This is another one. Just going to put it back in the memory
and learn from this week, learn from Saturday, and come out stronger from it”.
Guthrie started off his final round campaign with a bogey on the very first hole that he played and made a comeback with two straight birdies starting from the third hole.
The highlight of his performance includes six birdies on the back nine of the course that allowed him to move 22 positions up on the leaderboard.
“It's great week. Had a lot fun. Had a blast with my brother on the bag,” he said. “Just happy I kind of played a good round today and stayed in it and played a really solid back nine. Proud of the way I hung in there”.
Guthrie will now head for the Open Championship, where he will make his debut in the major championship.
It has not been long enough when he turned professional. Yet, he can be a real threat to his opponents at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club because of his ability to record low at any point of the game.
In the meantime, Zach Johnson outshined the overnight leader Troy Matteson with a birdie on the second extra hole in the playoffs to record the ninth PGA Tour victory of his career.
Both the players entered the playoffs after carding a 20-under par tournament score each. Scott Piercy took the third spot at 18-under par 266.
