John Degenkolb bags his fifth Vuelta a Espana stage victory while Alberto Contador takes an overall win
John Degenkolb of Team Argos-Shimano is enjoying a splendid season and has filled his bag with a numerous victories throughout the year.
His most recent win came during the 115 kilometre race as he completed the chase to Madrid in a total time of 2 hours, 44 minutes and 57 seconds and restricted the race favourites.
Elia Viviani of Team Liquigas-Cannondale finished second with Daniele Bennati of Team RadioShack-Nissan, Allan Davis of Team Orica-GreenEdge and Koldo Fernandez of Team Garmin-Sharp  securing the third, fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Prior to the Vuelta, Degenkolb bagged two stages and an overall victory at the Tour de Picardie, stage 7 win at the Tour de Pologne, two stages and a third overall finish at the Four Days of Dunkirk, fifth overall at the Milan-San Remo and sixth overall position at the E3 Harelbeke 2012.
He also succeeded at the second, fifth, seventh and the tenth stages of the Vuelta a Espana and winning the final stage of the race has really added flavour to all the previous victories at the Spanish Grand Tour.
Grischa Niermann of Team Rabobank and Mikel Astarloza Chaurreau of Team Euskaltel-Euskadi claimed the first and the second sprints of the race.
Meanwhile Alberto Contador Velasco of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank was given the most combative award during the race.
Contador scored a comfortable overall victory at the race after he managed to maintain his dominance at the top spot after the final general classifications.
Alejandro Valverde Belmonte of Team Movistar finished 1 minute and 16 seconds behind at the second position with Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver, Christopher Froome and Daniel Moreno Fernandez securing the third, fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Valverde missed out on the overall victory but managed to secure the top position at the point’s classifications, registering 199 UCI points throughout the three-week race.
Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver, Alberto Contador, John Degenkolb and Daniele Bennati occupied the next four positions with 193, 161, 149 and 107 UCI points respectively.
Simon Clarke of Team Orica-GreenEdge, David De La Fuente Rasilla of Team Caja Rural and Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver of Team Katusha claimed the top three positions after the overall mountain classifications.
