John Degenkolb could not fulfil his goal of finishing amongst top ten at the Paris-Roubaix 2012
John Degenkolb of Team Argos-Shimano was targeting to finish amongst the top ten cyclists during the Paris-Roubaix 2012.
The cyclist made his debut at the French race in 2011 and finished at the 19th position after his impressive performance.
He was optimistic before the start of the event, “I showed in the last few weeks that my shape isn't bad and that I can follow the best. I hope I can achieve a top ten result", John told Cyclingnews.
"I've trained every day over the winter and it's a race I'd like to one day win. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. I'll give it everything and I have nothing to lose, that's my big advantage".
Degenkolb was aware of the fact that it will be impossible to match the likes of Boonen, Hushovd and Pozzato and ruled them favourites for the contest.
"Of course the likes of Tom Boonen and Pippo Pozzato are the favourites. In this race you can't count out Thor Hushovd either and there are a few guys who can win tomorrow”.
John failed to produce results during the 257.5 kilometre race on Sunday and had to settle for the 63rd overall position during the race.
However, his prediction of Tom Boonen as the favourite of the race paid off. Boonen claimed the top spot and engraved his name in the record books.
He now equals the record of winning the Paris-Roubaix for a maximum number of four times.
Roger De Vlaeminck is the only cyclist to do so and he enjoyed the honours for 35 consecutive years.
Degenkolb is now eyeing the remaining part of the season.
His side, Team Argos-Shimano has received a wild card invitation at the Tour de France and the German might make his debut at the French race.
The Dutch team is enjoying a terrific start to its 2012 season and has already registered six victories in the season.
Marcel Kittel helped the side with the maximum wins after he filled his bag with stage victories at the Etoile de Bessèges, Tour of Oman, Three Days of De Panne and the first place finish at the Scheldeprijs 2012.
Patrick Gretsch claimed the opening prologue stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia to help Team Argos-Shimano with a perfect start to the new season.
