John Degenkolb to lead Team Germany at the Worlds
John Degenkolb will lead the German team at the 2012 UCI Road World Championships as per the announcement made by the German Cycling Federation.
The cyclist showed his forceful form at the Vuelta a Espana where he managed to grab five stages, including, stage 2, 5, 7, 10, 21 and became the first German to receive the honour.
He will be accompanied by Marcus Burghardt, Simon Geschke, Linus Gerdemann, Christian Knees, Paul Martens and Fabian Wegmann at the coming event.
Reigning Time Trial Champion Tony Martin will target the chrono, time trials event and he noted that finishing 11th at the Vuelta a Espana time trial will not really alter his concentration for the Worlds.
“Even though I didn’t get the placing I had hoped for in the time trial, I am quite satisfied,” Martin said on his personal website.
“As I feared beforehand, the climb made me grit my teeth. I have to admit that I still have some improvement to make uphill”.
“You can’t afford weakness on a climb against guys like Contador, Rodriguez and Froome, who are much lighter than me”.
"I'm still on course for the Worlds," he said. "My feelings during the time trial were good. Even during the technical start I did well, so there’s no need to worry".
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg of Team Specialized-Lululemon and the current women time trial champion Judith Arndt of Team Orica-AIS will represent Germany for the final time.
The duo will also ride the rod race along with Claudia Häusler (Orica - AIS), Charlotte Becker, Trixi Worrack (Specialized-Lululemon), Romy Kasper and Hanka Kupfernagel (RusVelo).
Men road race: Marcus Burghardt (BMC), John Degenkolb, Simon Geschke (Argos-Shimano), Linus Gerdemann (RadioShack-Nissan), Christian Knees (Sky), Paul Martens (Rabobank), Fabian Wegmann (Garmin-Sharp).
Men Time Trial: Bert Grabsch (Omega Pharma Quick-Step), Patrick Gretsch (Argos-Shimano), Tony Martin (Omega Pharma Quick-Step).
Women road race: Judith Arndt, Claudia Häusler (Orica - AIS), Charlotte Becker, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg, Trixi Worrack (Specialized-Lululemon), Romy Kasper, Hanka Kupfernagel (RusVelo).
Women Time Trial: Judith Arndt (Orica - AIS), Ina-Yoko Teutenberg, Trixi Worrack (Specialized-Lululemon).
Men U23 Road Race: Nikias Arndt, Michel Koch (LKT Brandenburg), Emanuel Buchmann (Specialized Concept Store), Jasha Sutterlin (Thüringer Energie Team), Rick Zabel (Rabobank Continental).
Men U23 Time Trial: Jasha Sutterlin, Jacob Steigmiller (Thüringer Energie Team)
