John Gosden – One of the most successful trainers in history of horseracing
Although, most of the hard work in horseracing is done by the runner on the field, yet the role of a trainer cannot be ignored. There have been some legendary racehorse trainers in the past and at present, but one of the most successful of them is, John Gosden.
The Englishman has trained thousands of horses and is still doing a great job at the Clarehaven Stables in England. He has enjoyed a lot of success in his career, and there is still a lot more to come from him.
Gosden got the inspiration from his father, Towser Gosden, who was also a racehorse trainer, but was not as successful as his son. He did enjoy some success in his career, but the Second World War hurt his chances of becoming a legend.
However, there were no interruptions in the career of his son, who began his career as an assistant trainer, and went onto become one of the greats of the game.
He spent some time in California, working as an assistant to Tommy Doyle for quite some time, but later got the American Horse Training license in 1979.
After getting the license, Gosden worked with a lot of horses in California, and enjoyed a lot of success during that period. His hard work earned him the Eclipse Award, which was a major achievement for him.
The 61-year-old then moved back to England in 1989, and started working hard with the horses at Newmarket. His hard work paid off after a couple of years, as he managed to win the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp, and Sun Chariot Stakes in 1991.
The next year proved to be even more successful for him, as he won numerous events during that time period.
One of the highlights of Gosden’s career was his partnership with Italian jockey, Frankie Dettori, who is considered to be one of the best in the business. He has ridden plenty of horses to victory and is still going strongly.
There have been some very good runners, trained by Gosden in his career. One of them is the seven-year-old mare, Dar Re Mi, who earned six victories in her career out of 17 attempts.
The most important victory of the Singspiel’s daughter was the Dubai Sheema Classic, which she won by three quarters of a length.
She was not rated as the favourite to win back then, but her trainer had a lot of confidence in her abilities, and she made him proud in the end.
Other than this major win in the United Arab Emirates, Gosden won numerous events in Great Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and the United States.
However, he would definitely not forget what he achieved at the start of his career in the United States. He was young and enthusiastic back then and saddled a lot of horses to victory.
That really set the tone for him, and he never looked back, winning thousands of races, with the tally still increasing.
One of Gosden’s successful horses in the United States was Benny The Dip, who won five races out of 11 attempts.
He was successful right from the start of his career and delivered some memorable performances in the 1996/97 season. However, he died as a 10-year-old after suffering an injury in, 2003.
Overall, there have been many more horses trained by John Gosden, and his name will always be remembered as one of the most brilliant and hard working trainers of all time.
