John Gruden linked to Miami Hurricanes job
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach John Gruden has been linked to the vacant head coaching position at the University of Miami only two days after the Hurricanes fired former head coach Randy Shannon.
Gruden is currently an announcer for ESPN Monday Night Football. However, it has been reported by the Associated Press, The Sun-Sentinel and the Palm Beach Post that Gruden is interested in the job and the University of Miami is considering the Super Bowl-winning
coach.
University of Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt grew tired of the Hurricanes' inability to compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Costal Division after the team suffered a loss to the South Florida Bulls in week 13. The Hurricanes finished the regular
season 7-5 with a 5-3 record against conference opponents.
During his tenure, Shannon was unable to get the Hurricanes over the hump, going 28-22 in his four seasons with the club. The loss to the Bulls, who were 6-4 coming out of the Big East, was the final straw for Hocutt.
The Hurricanes' athletic director has already made it clear that money will not be an issue when deciding who will be the program’s next head coach.
It was revealed to the Associated Press that on Sunday night Gruden received the outline for a possible deal, which would pay him roughly $3 million per season.
Gruden issued a statement through ESPN on Sunday night and did not confirm or deny that he was speaking with representatives from Miami.
“I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN. I enjoy working with Mike [Tirico], Jaws [Ron Jaworski] and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job.” Gruden explained in his statement.
Miami will be led by offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland on an interim basis.
