  1. John Hancock was a wealthy merchant in Boston. He was president of the Continental Congress when they declared independence and approved the declaration. As president, he was probably the first to sign it (which may be why his signature is so large).

  2. John Hancock did sign the Declaration of Independence and no he wasn't black that was Frederick Douglas.

  3. yeah, john hancock was one the many men that signed it & in fact, he almost got in serious trouble for signing too big!

no, he was not black..he was a white man. back then, they certainly wouldn't have allowed a black man to be associated with gaining the white man's freedom.

  4. John Hancock was the guy that wrote his name HUGE on the Declaration of Independence so that King George III would not have to put his glasses on to read it. He was white.

  5. John Hancock was white and a real person who signed the Declaration of Independence .

  6. John Hancock was white and a real person.  In the movie "Hancock", the character doesn't know his name.  Someone asks him for his "John Hancock" which is slang for signature but he doesn't know his name; so he assumes the name of John Hancock.  Will Smith's John Hancock is not real.  The real John Hancock had the first and largest signature on the "Declaration of Independence."

  7. he was white and he signed the declaration of independence.
