John Higgins beats Jack Lisowski to secure his place in last 16 of 2011 Welsh Open – Snooker news
The world number one player John Higgins has beaten Jack Lisowski by a frame score of 4-3 in a best-of-seven frame match in last 16 of the 2011 Welsh Open.
Higgins was stretched fully from the teenager Lisowski who was playing his first televised match.
This was John Higgins first match after the death of his father who died with cancer and Higgins had to withdraw from the German Masters.
The second most favourite player of the tournament John Higgins could not play a good game at all as he was seen missing a lot of chances against the teenager and after a long battle finally won in the deciding frame.
In the first frame, Higgins was found a bit unlucky as he knocked a red in off the blue giving his opponent a chance. Lisowski found himself among the balls and produced an excellent break of 70 in the first frame making scores 1-0.
In the second frame, he was again the first one among the balls but he played a poor positional shot and the chance was wasted. Lisowski who showed some fearless pots also had many chances to claim the frame as well but he could not avail them and
finally Higgins after a bout of safety using his experience equalled the scores by 1-1.
In the third frame, Higgins made a break of 58 after getting a chance but broke down on the blue which was not expected at all. There was pretty much life in the frame when he gave his opponent a chance who missed a tricky red in the centre before
potting an excellent long one. Higgins played a sloppy safety shot on it. However, he was able to have the frame 2-1.
Similarly, the third frame was also taken by Higgins in which he made a break of 50 before missing a red with the side cushion but later on availed other chances.
The score was 3-1 now when the teenager Lisowski bounced back. In the fifth frame, he made a break of 32 before the pink rolled against him in the centre but Higgins handed him a reprieve and another 47 from Lisowski gave him a much-needed frame.
On the top of it, Lisowski was forced to take the match into the deciding frame as Higgins was missing so many balls giving plenty of chances to his opponent.
With the score 3-3, Higgins finally won the deciding frame after a few small breaks. Higgins had made it very tough as he was not able to play according to his standards. However, he has gone through and will face Dave Harold in the last 16 who has
come up after beating Ricky Walden by 4-3.
