John Howard doubts another call for ICC vice-presidency
John Howard, the former Australian Prime Minister, whose candidature for vice-presidency of International Cricket Council (ICC) was rejected by the executive board of ICC in June, doubts he will ever be nominated again by the Cricket Australia
and New Zealand Cricket for the same high profile position.
The ICC follows a regional recommendation system for its presidency post. This time, Australia and New Zealand had to put forward a candidate for the next ICC vice-president.In http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Cricket nominated
Howard for the post.
However, the nominations got a ‘big no’ from the ICC executive board in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Singapore-c3005 in June this year following a reported rift from its affiliated Asian and African nations.
After Howard’s rejection, the International Cricket Council had asked both the boards, CA and NZC, to come up with a new name by the 31st of August.
Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket successfully put forth Alen Isaac as a nominee for the new ICC vice-president, who will become the president of the apex body in 2012 after completion of Sharad Pawar’s 2-year presidency tenure.
Howard feels "sorry" for missing out on the post and doubts he would be invited by his country and affiliate (NZC) again for the high profile position.
"I was sorry that I didn't get that job but it's happened ...” A newspaper quoted Howard saying. “I don't expect I will get invited again".
Howard had been a controversial pick for the top position of ICC, with many relating his open condemnation to Robert Mugabe's government in Zimbabwe as the basic reason behind his rejection. It was under Howard’s government that Australia led the move for
sanctions on http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 for its land owners’ strategy.
Howard also invited the rage of the powerful Asian cricket alliance by calling Sri Lankan spin wizard http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Muttiah-Muralitharan-c78157 a "chucker," in 2004. Howard’s non-cricketing background was also one big reason behind his failure to make the high-status
ICC post.
