John Hughes believes Derek Riordan should be in Scottish squad
Hibernian manager John Hughes has said that he feels Derek Riordan should be in the Scottish squad after his performances for the club this season.
The Hibernian manager feels that the Scottish manager Craig Levein will not be able to ignore the player if he continues his good form.
Hughes said: "I think he has shown goal scoring form to certainly come into Craig's thoughts of getting in there. He got a right buzz the last time he was involved, but he just needs to keep scoring goals for Hibs and then I'm quite sure the door will open
again."
Riordan can feel unlucky about not being included in the Scottish squad for the European 2012 qualifiers. Levein has watched Riordan play and will have been impressed by the strikers fabulous goal against Celtic in Hibernian's 2-1 defeat.
Levein has opted for the form QPR striker James Mackie instead. The other options at the Scottish manager’s disposal are Chris Iwelumo, Steven Fletcher, Kenny Miller, Shaun Maloney and Steven Naismith.
Riordan made his debut for Scotland in 2005, but since then he has hardly featured for the side. He played in two friendly games with Wales and Japan late last year under the former boss George Burley. However Riordan has not featured in Levein’s plans since
he has taken over as Scottish manager.
The Hibernian striker has scored three goals for the club so far including the wonder goal in the defeat to Celtic. The Scotsman has played in a more advanced role for his club this season after Anthony Stokes was sold to Celtic during the summer.
However, despite Riordan’s good form this season Hibernian are currently ninth in the Scottish Premier League and have only won their opening game. Riordan may have to score more goals if Levein is to consider drafting the Hibernian player into his next
squad.
