John Hughes steps down as Hibernian manager
John Hughes has left the manager’s position at Scottish Premier League club Hibernian by mutual consent.
Hibernian had endured a difficult run of results, having failed to win a match since the first league game of the season. A 2-0 defeat away to St Johnstone over the weekend was the catalyst for Hughes' departure.
In a statement on the club’s official website on Monday, Hughes revealed that he had greatly enjoyed the opportunity to manage the club he supported as a boy.
He said that, "I have relished every minute of my time at Hibernian, the club I have always supported and which will always have a special place in my heart. I am proud of what we achieved last season, and I wish the board, players and supporters every success."
The club’s chairman Rod Petrie said that, "John has been a hard-working and dedicated manager of Hibernian. As a former captain, and as a fan, he recognises that a fresh face and a new approach is the best option for the Club at this time. We thank him for
all of his hard work, and for his honesty and passion for the Club."
Hughes had only been manager of the club for 15 months, having taken over in June 2009 after moving from Falkirk. A good run of form in his first campaign with the Edinburgh club saw them tipped as title contenders before slipping back to finish fourth behind
Rangers, Celtic and Dundee United.
However, Hughes could not keep his side’s good form going into this campaign. Hibs have been defeated in four of their seven SPL games to leave them just a point below 12th-placed St Mirren. They have also been dumped out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup
and the UEFA Europa League.
