John Huh enjoys his PGA Tour rookie season more than his expectations
In December 2011, John Huh competed in the PGA Tour qualifying school and made it to the PGA Tour for the first time in his career.
Starting his rookie season, he wished to make it to the final two rounds and earn some good finishes. The Sony Open in Hawaii witnessed him make his debut with a 53rd-place finish on the leaderboard.
The very next tournament, the Farmers Insurance Open, saw him record the first top-10 finish – he tied for the sixth position. In February, he participated in the Mayakoba Golf Classic with the same mission of making the cut.
However, he performed better than expected, as he defeated Robert Allenby in the playoffs, to add the first PGA Tour title to his resume in just five starts.
It was a phenomenal performance by the 22-year-old, who calls himself a Korean-American. The victory completely changed his mind set. He then started playing for wins rather than just focusing on making the cuts.
At the Valero Texas Open in April, he came close to the second victory of his career on the tour. However, he remained two strokes shy of the winner Ben Curtis and tied for the second position.
In 26 events that he has played so far, he missed the cut only five times, and he is now among the elite 30-man field of the Tour Championship.
"I feel really lucky to be here, especially as a rookie," he said. "Before I started the season, I told myself I want to just play a weekend, which is not easy to do on the PGA Tour, making the cut and playing a weekend, and being in contention”.
"That was my goal before the season started, but it changed a little bit in the middle of the year”.
According to him, he has achieved a great deal of success in the past few months. Still, he does not want to put pressure on himself and plans to play the final leg of the PGA Tour Playoffs with the aim of at least making the cut.
"I think I should just stay where I'm at right now ... play the weekend first, play good and finish well,”he said.
