John Huston records his maiden win on Champions Tour at d**k's Sporting Goods Open
To complete the troika of maiden wins on all the three PGA Tour events last week, John Huston went over to win d**k's Sporting Goods Open on the Champions Tour staged at En-Joie Golf Club, Endicott, New York.
The victory, although regardless of how it really was achieved, probably owed much to Mark Wiebe’s final-moment disaster when he shot four back to back bogeys to let Huston romp to a big win. This was Huston’s third appearance on the Champions Tour after
turning 50 and the victory will go a long way in helping him establish himself on the circuit.
The former Nationwide Tour member, who also had a chance to play on the PGA Tour, pulled in a round of seven-under, 65 on the final day to close for an aggregate of 16-under, 200 to win his first title on the tour. Huston had two Top-20 finishes in his two
appearances on the tour and bagged a winner’s share of $258,750.
Huston has waited for several years to finally win a title in his drought-ridden career. He won the last event at Farm Bureau Classic in 2003 and with this win, he has reserved a place for the 2012 and 2013 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.
For Wiebe however, it was probably the worst days of his career, when he caved into the immense pressure of the final round to stumble with four bogeys. It also comes as a surprise that Wiebe has not dropped a single shot in the two opening rounds and was
on the right course to record another victory on the Champions Tour.
Nevertheless, Wiebe has had a phenomenal run so far for the season and has already won the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. He also finished runner-up at Toshiba Classic and posted another top finish at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.
Nick Price, number two on the Champions Tour Money List, carded an impressive final round of six-under, 66, but his previous lopsided performance in second round, pulled him back to finish for an outright second. Winner of the Toshiba Classic of the season,
Price carded six birdies in his final bogey-free round to reach the $1-million mark in his tour earnings for the fourth consecutive year, with his runners up share of $154,000. His earnings for the year 2011 have soared to $1,008,718.
The legendary Hale Irwin finished for a record joint 10th for the 203rd time in his stellar career, to become the second person to post the highest Top-10 finishes alongside Bob Charles. Irwin posted a final round of five-under, 67
to close for an aggregate of nine-under, 207.
Tom Lehman, number one on the Champion Tour’s Money List, finished for joint 15th with his aggregate score of eight-under, 208. He pulled in a final round score of six-under.
