John Isner; A look at his performance in 2010
Born on April 26, 1985 in the city of North Carolina, John Robert Isner is a professional tennis player from the United States of America. He is the second highest ranked American at number nineteen in the ATP ranking list behind Andy Roddick on the tour.
Isner’s most famous wins were versus Roddick at the United States Open back in 2009 and against Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon this season where he took part in the longest tennis match in the history against Nicolas Mahut.
The Florida resident started off his 2010 campaign by competing at the 2010 Heineken Open Men’s singles competition in Auckland. The unseeded American got the better of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Juan Monaco, Tommy Robredo and Albert Montanes to make his way
into his second career ATP title battle on the tour. In the finals, the American prevented a championship point to get past the 2001 Australian Open runner up Arnaud Clement in three sets. The final match score was 6–3, 5–7, 7–6(2).
The win in Auckland was Isner’s first ATP tour crown and he received $5,000 prize money after the match.
At the year’s first Grand Slam, the Australian Open in Melbourne, the 25-year-old Isner got the better of world number 49 Andreas Seppi in his opening round match in a five-setter epic. The final score line was 6–3, 6–3, 3–6, 5–7, 6–4. He outlasted Louk
Sorensen in the next round in three sets to set up a third round clash with Gael Monfils. In the third round, the American did well to surpass Monfils and thus improved his career mark to 3–1 against him. The American was eventually defeated in the round of
sixteen at the hands of top ranked Brit, Andy Murray in three sets. The final score line was 7–6(4), 6–3, 6–2.
Isner next competed at the 2010 Regions Morgan Keegan tournament as a sixth seed player to win the title. He did well to reach the title battle after brushing aside Ryan Harrison, Jarkko Nieminen, Ivo Karlovic and Philipp Petzschner. In the finals, the right-handed
Isner was dispatched off by his countrymen Sam Querrey in three sets. The final match score was 6–7(3), 7–6(5), 6–3.
Despite of losing at the hands of Sam, Isner didn’t lose hope and teamed up with Sam to win the doubles competition, beating Jordan Kerr and Ross Hutchins in two sets. The final match score was 6–4, 6–4.
At the French Open in Roland Garros, his ranking assured his first direct entry into the main draw of the event. Seeded number 17 to win the title, the professional tennis player from America won his opening round match by dismissing Andrey Golubev in three
sets. He next swept aside Marco Chiudinelli 6–7(3), 7–6(3), 7–6(7), 6–4, only to fall down at the hands of eventual semi-finalist Tomas Berdych in three sets. The final match score was 2–6, 2–6, and 1–6.
Ranked number nineteen in the world, Isner entered the grass court Grand Slam tournament as seeded number 24 to win the title. The American couldn’t go beyond the second round as he was beaten by Thiemo de Bakker 0–6, 3–6, 2–6.He made his way into the second
round after a five-setter hard fought win over Nicolas Mahut in the opening match at the All England Club.
At the Cincinnati Masters, Isner made an appearance as an unseeded player and withdrew from his second round match after trailing at 5-4 in the opening set against David Nalbandian as a result of his ankle injury.
Seeded number eighteen at the year’s final major, the United States Open in New York, the 25-year-old Isner couldn’t go beyond the third round as he was beaten by Mikhail Youzhny in four sets. The final match score was 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-7(5), 4-6.
In more recent performance at the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters in China, the professional tennis player from America, John Isner got the better of Lukasz Kubot 4-6, 7-6(9), 7-6(7), only to fall down at the hands of world number two Roger Federer in their
first ever clash since 2007.
