John Isner/Sam Querrey upset Lukasz Kubot/Oliver Marach in the second round of Mutua Madrid Open
Unseeded pair of John Isner and Sam Querrey from the United States accomplished a surprise victory over the fifth seed duo of Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Oliver Marach of Austria, in the doubles category of the second round of Mutua
Madrid Open on Thursday. The Americans took one hour and nine minutes to conclude a hard-fought victory at 6-3, 1-6, 10-7, to book a spot in the quarter-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 1000 tournament at Madrid, Spain.
The back-and-forth affair featured an intense contest between the two teams, with Isner and Querrey finally coming out as the winners. The American duo had a terrific start to bag the opener convincingly but slumped poorly in the
following set to let their opponents back in the game. A decisive third set was imposed and after a nail biting finish, the Americans secured victory to move on to the quarterfinals of Mutua Madrid Open.
Isner and Querrey kept the games short and professional, running through the games with ease. They tend to be a bit confused in the second set, holding serve in just in one game. The Americans regrouped immediately in the third
set and surprised everyone by outplaying the fifth seeded pair in the tournament.
The American serve was exceptionally precise in the opening set, reaching 88 per cent, including three aces. Isner and Querrey reeled off 20 out of 24 serve points in the opener and successfully defended three break points from
their opponents. A vital serve break in the fourth game proved sufficient for the Americans, who took momentum from it to seal the first set at 6-3 to get one up in the contest.
An amazing comeback from Kubot and Marach was witnessed in the second set, as they showed the true class of being the fifth seed. Kubot and Marach proved absolutely devastating in the second set, striking two straight serve breaks
to outclass the American pair. They clinched 27 out of 40 total points being played and sealed the second set at 6-1 to bring the contest on even terms.
The final set went to the wire but Isner and Querrey kept their nerves to crack some timely winners, finishing off the game at 10-7. The Americans will take on the fourth seeded Indo-Pak pair of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi
in the quarter-final of the Mutua Madrid Open.
