John Isner beats Juan Carlos Ferrero in Miami Tennis Cup exhibition – Tennis News
American challenger, John Isner, rallied past the Juan Carlos Ferrero, who recently retired in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-3, in the six-player Miami Tennis Cup exhibition event.
The 32-year-old, Ferrero, was the 2003 French Open champion and initially displayed a remarkable tennis performance. The two contender waged a tough initial battled and dragged the opener with a tie-breaker. Isner picked up the
last seven straight points, as he was unable to bag away the initial two. The Spanish contestant admitted his defeat and bestowed his serve in the eighth game, allowing Isner to take the lead.
In a post match interview, Isner told the media, “It probably wasn’t the best match, as I know he hasn’t played in forever and I’m just getting going again. The best way to prepare yourself for a new year is to get out there and
play a match like that. I know there wasn’t much riding on the match, but it had that match feel that you can’t emulate in practice.”
The 27-year-old manifested a decent game plan throughout the year, he is well known for his powerful forehands and aces. The British number one, Andy Murray, will battle against recently retired Andy Roddick on Saturday night.
The American challenger is appearing in his second exhibition ever since his retirement from the courts of competitive tennis, in September after the US Open Grand Slam.
Talking to the media, Roddick said, “I enjoy playing in these things because you still play a little, see old friends, not something you're training for weeks. It's a nice way to stay connected without all the commitments and pressure
of the normal tour.”
The first match of the tournament took place between Nicolas Almagro and Alejandro Falla. The 27-year-old Spanish professional consolidated his straight sets win 6-4, 6-1. He beautifully served the initial two games of the opener
to implant his firm footage and then took a flying start towards the end against his rival.
