John Isner blasts past Bernard Tomic to reach semis – Delray Bach Tennis Championships 2012
Top seeded John Isner stomped over the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, in straight sets at the Delray Beach Tennis Championships 2012 on Friday. He formulated a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the 19-year-old to secure a place in the semi-finals at this hard
court event held in Delray Beach, United States.
Ranked 11th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Isner remained on track to bid for his fourth tour-level title. He required 56-minutes to oust the teenager and advanced into the final four
at this ATP World Tour 250 series event.
The 26-year-old assertively entered the Delray Beach Tennis Center and despite losing his serve once, he capitalised on two out of three break chances to bag the opener with a 6-3 win. The American brushed off one out of two breakpoints he came across and
fired five vicious aces.
Isner perfected his game in the following set and smoothly plucked his entire serves without facing any barrier. On the other hand, he cashed in both break opportunities to pocket the set with a 6-2 success. He committed more double faults and clobbered
a poor first serve share of 39 percent. However, the American spectacularly clicked eight out of nine points on it.
Next in line for the highest ranked player of the tournament is Kevin Anderson of South Africa. The South African number one saved three match points to upset Andy Roddick, a former world number one, in a three set mouth-watering match. Anderson lost his
serve three times but capitalised on two out of nine break chances to seal the deal with a 2-6, 7-6 (9), 6-4 victory in almost two and half hours.
Israeli tennis ace, Dudi Sela, rallied past the fifth seed, Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, in an epic see-saw thriller.
The world number 75 confidently stepped on the Delray Beach’s hard courts and easily swiped in entire serves. He got the breakthrough in the seventh game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Kohlschreiber found his momentum in the second set and after recovering in the fourth and 14th game, he took the set to a tie-breaker. The German prevailed in it and sealed the equaliser with a 7-6(4) score line.
The match was standing at a knife edge but the Israeli star re-gathered his form and went on a six-game rampage.
Sela will next confront the Australian qualifier, Marinko Matosevic, who bounced back to outrun Ernests Gulbis in 92-minutes.
