John Isner dumps Ryan Sweeting to reach the final-eight – Delray Beach International 2012
Top seed John Isner reached his second consecutive quarter-final, beating countryman Ryan Sweeting in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the second round at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships in Florida, USA on Wednesday.
Isner took an early lead, clinching a break in the second game and capitalizing on it to move ahead 3-0. Sweeting got three chances to win Isner’s serve in the ninth game but failed to convert any of them, dropping the set 3-6.
Both players matched each other with four aces but Isner had a better first delivery percentage, putting in 70 per cent as compared to 45 by his opponent. Isner captured 17 of the 21 first and five of the nine second service points
in the opener.
Sweeting and Isner their first four games to take the score to 2-2 in the second set. Isner made a breakthrough in the fifth and consolidated on it to serve out the set in the tenth, claiming it 6-4.
One of the tallest players on the ATP World Tour, Isner took complete advantage of his height and kept on bombarding huge serves on Sweeting. The 26-year-old smacked six aces and 63 percent of the first deliveries.
The American took just an hour and seven minute to come out victorious from the match.
Commenting on his serve, Isner said, “A lot of times for me to be successful I’m going to have to have my serve and I did today when I needed it. I served well, went for my second serve, wasn’t going for broke, but I hit my spots
and it got me out of a couple of jams.”
The American, who was troubled badly by humidity in the last match, said, “Whenever, in the past, when I’ve played tournaments in humidity I’ve always struggled because I hadn’t acclimated yet. But tonight I felt so much better
than I did yesterday. I am still not all the way there. I could feel better out there but it was so much better.”
Isner will play eighth seed Bernard Tomic in the quarterfinals. Tomic ousted Tim Smyczek of USA in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 in the second round.
