John Isner outclasses Christian Lindell in the singles rubber of the Power Horse World Team Cup
America had a brilliant start at the Power Horse World Team Cup, as world number 39 John Isner took down Sweden’s Christian Lindell in the round robin stage of the competition at the Rochusclub in Dusseldorf, Germany, on Monday.
Isner took down his opponent comprehensively in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, in just 71 minutes to win the first singles rubber of the opening tie.
Sweden suffered early loss when Lindell got beaten by the much superior Isner in their singles rubber; though world number five, Robin Soderling battled hard to win his singles match against Sam Querrey to make the score one-all.
The final death blow was delivered to Sweden when the American duo wins the doubles matchup to settle the scores at 2-1 and win their first tie in the competition.
Isner gave the initial advantage to his side by taking down the bleak Swede opponent in the opening rubber. It was the first time Lindell playing against Isner but the American faced no real challenge in disposing him off the contest.
The Swede hung in the opener for a while but proved a wall of sand in the following set, in which he held serve in just one game. Lindell failed to register any break point in the entire contest but suffered four from Isner.
The American’s big serve played a vital part in his victory, as he remained unbroken throughout the game. Isner delivered 75 per cent of his first serve on target, including six aces and no double faults. He had an aggressive start
to the opening set, firing winners down the line to create early pressure upon the confused Swede opponent. Isner’s serve precision reached 78 per cent in the opener, while he reeled off 23 out of 32 total serve points.
Lindell competed very well at the start and held his serve in the opening four games before Isner finally broke him. The American cashed in the only break chance he received in the first set and served out of the set at 6-4 to
get one up in the contest.
Things turned even worse for the Swede in the next set as Isner broke his serve in the very first game to lead 2-0. A series of unforced errors was seen from Lindell and his opponent took full advantage of it to stung two consecutive
serve breaks to seal the contest at 6-1, giving Team America the desired start. Later on, Isner teamed up with Mardy Fish to take down Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt in the doubles matchup and brought a 2-1 victory to America in its opening tie.
