John Isner overcomes Donald Young to reach quarters – Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012
In an all-American duel, top seeded John Isner proved his class after tumbling over Donald Young in straight sets at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012 on Thursday. He clobbered a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over his compatriot to book a spot in the last eight at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event held in Memphis, Tennessee.
The world number 13 warded off early resistance to dump the youngster in their second tour-level meeting. After bagging this 102-minute match, Isner not only improved to a 2-0 FedEx ATP Head 2 Head record against Young but also inched closer to bag his fourth ATP title. The higher ranked American smashed 22 aces to outshine Young in every department of tennis.
The 26-year-old made a nervy entry at the Racquet Club of Memphis and suffered the first blow in the sixth game. However, he recovered in the very next game and kept remaining serves to impose a tie-breaker. The high spirited Isner jumped to a 5-2 lead before pocketing the opener with a 7-6(3) win.
The Florida resident, Isner, lifted his game in the proceeding set and held his serve in the opening game. The beaming American maintained his intensity and continued plucking remaining serves after defending the only breakpoint he encountered. Isner then converted one out of four break opportunities to his advantage in the last game and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
Young, ranked 41st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, on the other side displayed dismal performance at this hard court tournament. The left-handed clobbered a lower first serve share of 66 percent as opposed to Isner’s 77 percent and brushed off four out of six breakpoints he faced.
Next in line for the highest ranked player of this event is the Austrian number one, Jurgen Melzer, who bounced back from a set down to outclass the Croatian star, Ivan Dodig. The left-handed Austrian committed several double faults and cashed in two out of eight break chances to register a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) score line in their first meeting.
