John Jermyn leads Ireland over France 2-0 in EuroHockey Championship in Germany
A dual strike by John Jermyn led the Irish Men to an important victory as they defeated the French outfits by 2-0 in their second Pool B match in the EuroHockey Nations Championship (Men) played at Warsteiner HockeyPark in Monchengladbach, Germany on Monday,
August 22.
The match was played in a very tense environment where both the teams had to struggle very hard throughout the entire match to find opposite’s net. The Irish, however, created ample opportunities but they failed to score in the first thirty five minutes
due to some close misses.
Same was the case with France but they remained much resolute in their defence that denied the scoring chances of the Irish. The first part of the game was evenly balanced between the sides as there was no scoring action in that period while the second half
was somewhat belonged to the Irish where they scored two goals whereas their opponents remained scoreless like the first one.
The first half started with an early action by the French side as they created a wonderful chance in the opening moments of the match but the shot from Jean-Baptiste Pauchet was beautifully saved by David Harte, the Irish goalkeeper. Two minutes later, the
Irish counter attacked the French territory and there they were awarded a penalty corner but the Irish shot was well saved by the French defence line in the 5th minute.
The remaining part of the first half also saw some wonderfully created moves by the Irish but they still remained scoreless at the interval as the shots from Michael Watt and Timothy Cockram were unrewarded in the later part of the first half. The first
half ended at 0-0.
The Irish started the second half superbly as they earned an early penalty corner just two minutes into the game the shot from Jermyn was denied by the French defence. However, the Irish continued their attacks in the French circle and eventually they succeeded
in the 56th minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke and John Jermyn converted it into their first goal of the match. Going down by a single strike the French athletes made some desperate efforts to equalise but remained unsuccessful until
the end.
The Irish were once again looked in action just two minutes before the close of the play when they were awarded another penalty stroke in the 68th minute and John Jermyn again ticked the board without making any mistake. The match finished at
2-0 to Ireland.
