John Joe Nevin ditches Amir Khan – Boxing Special
John Joe Nevin, Olympic silver medallist of London 2012 Olympic, has ditched former IBF and WBA light welterweight titlist Amir Khan to join his newly formed promotion. The Olympian has instead signed up for World Series of Boxing (WSB) Team Championships
to forge his professional career.
Khan, who was much impressed by Nevin’s show during the Olympics run, is now disappointed with the Olympian’s decision.
“It’s disappointing that John Joe will be staying amateur as I firmly believe that he has potential to make big waves in the professional scene,” said Khan. “Nevertheless, I respect his decision ... and I do not rule out possibility of working with him in
future.”
Nevin will now join Irish current European champion Joe Ward in the British Mionhearts squad as announced by WSB today. Much like Khan’s promotions, even WSB is a newly formed one, looking forward to add skilful fighters in its arsenal.
Last month, the former WBA and IBF unified champion Khan announced on national television that he would be working with Nevin to turn him pro.
Former WBA champion and Irish Olympian Barry McGuigan was present at the launch of WSB today, asserting that he expects a lot from the Irish pair.
“Joe Ward will be a sensation in the World Series of Boxing as he’s an awesome talent. He’ll box at 85kg and that will suit him down to the ground as he’s moving up toward heavyweight all the time,” he said.
“I believe Joe could win it out, he’s that good. John is also an exceptional talent as we saw from his performances at the Olympic Games. They are dynamite additions to any team.”
It seems like Khan is not just facing blows in the ring as a fighter but also outside the ring as the head of a boxing promotion. Since Nevin is not in the league anymore, Khan only has his brother Haroon Khan signing up as a major prospect for the company.
Earlier today, news of Haroon Khan training with Khan’s former trainer Oliver Harrison surfaced.
For now, Khan is disappointed to lose yet another major bet in the business of boxing.
