John John Florence and Jeremy Flores remain undefeated in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The fifth and sixth heat of Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 48 (Round 2) went down at the beach-break of Ribeira D’Ilhas in Ericeira, Portugal, on Wednesday, June 15th.
Hawaii’s John John Florence walked away with the top honours, leaving Brazil’s Andre Silva to finish second and stay alive in the competition. Brazil’s Leonardo Neves rounded out the third position and Hawaii’s Granger Larsen finished last.
The sixth heat was won by France’s Jeremy Flores after an intense battle with South Africa’s Brandon Jackson, who eventually settled for a runner-up finish. New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand and Brazil’s Jeronimo Vargas got eliminated from the competition after finishing third and fourth respectively.
The conditions prevailing at the primary event site during the second day of Quiksilver Pro were not ideal at all, with low tides breaking at the beach and presenting the surfers with a challenge. However, Florence managed to read the conditions quite well and utilised the knowledge to make it to the top. He scored an impressive 7.33 points off a wave early in the contest, soon adding another 6.40 points to his account to finish with a two-wave total of 13.73 points and qualifying to the next round confidently.
Silva made it to Round 3 as well by finishing second in the heat. He caught numerous waves during the heat to eventually collect a 5.67 and 6.30-point wave to finish with a two-wave total of 11.97 points.
Neves finished third with a heat-total of 11.83, while Larsen scored 10.10 to finish at the bottom. Both the surfers were removed from the race for the event title due to their bottom-two finish.
The next heat may have been a four-way battle, but it was the showdown between Flores and Jackson that remained the main highlight of the 30-minute heat. Both surfers looked equally determined to clinch the win and put in a lot of effort to get the desired result.
Flores started things off with a 6.83-point wave and Jackson responded by earning a 5.83. The South African immediately added an amazing 7.83 points to his score and move to a heat-total of 13.66 points.
However, the French was rose up to the challenge and scored 6.93 points off his second wave to regain the lead and finish with a two-wave total of 13.76, leaving his rival to settle for a second-place finish.
Stairmand and Vargas remained unimpressive during the heat, finishing with a heat-total of 9.97 and 8.33 points respectively to get removed from the title contention.
