John John Florence and Jeremy Flores survive Round 2 of 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing
The eighth Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) event of the year, 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing, continued to deliver a heavy dose of intense action with the 12th heat of round of 48 (Round 2) on Thursday afternoon, August 4, at the Huntington
Beach Pier, California.
After the exciting four-man battles concluded, it was Hawaii’s John John Florence who walked away with top honours. France’s Jeremy Flores put up a determined performance to earn the runner-up position, consequently securing his place in the round of 24
(Round 3).
America’s Nat Young barely missed out on the second place and got eliminated from the competition after finishing in third place. His compatriot, Nathan Yeomans found his current ASP Prime event campaign come to a premature end as well after he rounded out
for fourth.
While the first round of the competition had been extremely challenging for the surfers due to the demanding conditions prevailing at the Huntington Beach Pier, the conditions had improved quite a lot by the time the second round had kicked off. With an
improvement in conditions, the third day of the competition had turned out to be action-packed, with 11 heats narrowing the field of 44 surfers to 22.
The battle for the remaining two slots took place between Florence, Flores, Young and Yeomans in the 12th heat. None of the four surfers lacked the potential to take the win, so an intense contest was expected.
As the heat got underway, the 18-year-old Florence got off to a good start, locking a wave to show off the stylish manoeuvres in his arsenal to impress the judges. He soon collected another decent wave to finish with a heat-total of 14.00 points. The score
remained unbeatable throughout the course of the battle and eventually carried him off to victory, sending him through to the next round.
Flores and Young battled hard to get their hands on the second position, which would guarantee a spot for them in Round 3. Both the surfers managed to remain at par with each other in terms of performance for most part of the heat. However, the French edged
pasted his American rival in the final minutes of the battle, finishing with a heat-total of 12.57 points against Young’s 11.97.
Losing the battle for the second position to the French, Young finished the heat in third place, consequently getting eliminated from the competition. Another local surfer, Yeomans also failed to make the Round 3 cut after finishing with a heat-total of
9.57 points.
