John John Florence and Perth Standlick power their way into Round 4 at Vans World Cup of Surfing
Hawaii’s John John Florence and Australia’s Perth Standlick stunned the crowd at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, with their phenomenal performance in their respective Round 3 (Round of 64) heats of the Vans World Cup of Surfing, second of three events on the
30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, on Monday December 3, 2012.
The winning performances served to carry both the surfers into the fourth round (Round of 32) to continue their pursuit for the coveted prize money and Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points that were on offer.
Hawaii’s Billy Kemper and America’s Brett Simpson made the Round 4 cut as well after claiming second position in the ninth and tenth heat respectively.
The latest day of the competition turned out to be as exciting as ever, with waves of faces up to 10 feet graced the main event site. The surfers remained undaunted by the intimidating waves and took on the challenge to put on bold performances, which highlighted
both their skills as well as experience.
Florence remained the standout surfer of the day as he delivered a phenomenal performance during the ninth heat to down his fellow Hawaiians.
The 20-year-old young-gun, who is also in contention for the 2012 ASP World Championship Title, got off to an excellent start and wasted very little time in posting an 8.93 off his first business-wave on the score-board.
Keeping the momentum going, he added an additional 8.87 to his account, thus moving to a heat-total of 17.80 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end of the four-man battle to seal the deal in his favour.
Kemper was nothing short of impressive during the either, landing the only 10-point ride of the day. However, he only managed to back it up with a 5.77-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 15.77 points, which was not enough to get him the win
but proved more than adequate to take him through into the next round.
Fredrick Patacchia and Nathan Florence remained overshadowed by the brilliant performances of their two rivals. Finishing with a heat-total of 7.67 and 7.37 points respectively, they found themselves eliminated from the event.
The 10th heat saw Standlick claim victory after posting an 8.33 and 6.33 on the score-board for a heat-total of 14.66 points.
Simpson also managed to make it through into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 12.00 points, which included a 6.50 and 5.50-point ride.
Brazil’s Miguel Pupo and Hawaii’s Evan Valiere were unable to survive the heat after registering a heat-total of 10.93 and 7.90 points respectively.
