John John Florence and Taj Burrow power into Round 4 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro
The latest edition of the Reef Hawaiian Pro continued to treat the fans to a heavy dose of thrilling action during the Round of 64 (Round 3) that went down on Tuesday, November 22, at the acclaimed North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The surfing action went on
as Hawaii’s John John Florence squared off with his compatriot Kekoa Bacalso, Australia’s Matt Wilkinson and America’s Nathan Yeomans in the seventh heat, while the Australian force Taj Burrow took on Brazil’s Leonardo Neves, Hawaii’s Mason Ho and America’s
Conner Coffin in the eighth heat.
The seventh heat ended with Florence walking away with top honours to secure his place in the Round of 32 (Round 4), while Bacalso joined him in the next round after finishing as runner-up. Wilkinson and Yeomans faltered in their latest battle and ended
up getting eliminated after rounding out the third and fourth positions respectively.
The eighth heat saw the experience of Burrow carry him off to a comfortable victory and into the fourth round. Neves successfully extended his life in the competition after securing runner-up place. Ho and Coffin got ejected from the event after finishing
in third and fourth positions respectively.
The 19-year-old Florence continued to have an excellent year, which included his inception in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, by clinching a win his Round 3 heat at the Reef Hawaiian Pro. As the seventh heat kicked off, he got
off to a patient start before eventually beginning an onslaught. Locking on his first business wave, he unloaded a string of exquisite manoeuvres, earning 8.67 points for the effort. A few minutes later, he added an additional 7.93 points to his account to
finish with a heat-total of 16.60 points, which carried him off to a confident win.
Bacalso extended his life in the competition by securing second place in his Round 3 heat with a heat-total of 13.17 points, which included a 6.67 and 6.50-point wave.
Wilkinson collected a 6.13 and 5.27-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 11.40 points for third place, while Yeomans rounded out the bottom position with a two-wave total of 10.10 points. Both the surfers were consequently ejected from the competition
prematurely.
The eighth heat saw the 33-year-old Burrow remind everyone why he is considered among the deadliest competitors in the world. The Australian force effortlessly collected a 7.33 off his first business wave and later put the crowd in awe with a spectacular
8.93-point wave. The resultant heat-total of 16.26 points carried him off to a comfortable victory.
Neves remained pretty impressive during the four-man battle as well and collected a 5.93 and an impressive 8.43 off his top two waves to finish with a heat-total of 14.36 points. The score earned him the runner-up spot and thus carried him off into the next
round.
Ho was forced to settle for a third-place finish despite a competitive performance, which included a 6.50 and 7.47-point wave. Coffin finished in fourth position after getting to a heat-total of 12.20 points. Both the surfers shared a similar fate after
rounding out the bottom-two positions; elimination.
