Kenyan athlete, John Komen coasted through the course to claim victory at the Marathon de La Rochelle Serge Vigot, in a brilliant time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 13 seconds, on November 27, in La Rochelle, France. The athlete was tremendous in the Men’s category
throughout the competition, as he dominated the field of competitive runners.
Kenyan athletes, Eliud Kiplagat Barngetury and Samwel Maswai, from the very start of the race, ran as the pacemakers. The duo completed the distance of 5 km in a fast-paced time of 15 minutes and 12 seconds.
The weather was cool and foggy, and running under reasonable conditions, the start of the race was quite up to the expectations. John Komen, Nahashon Kimaiyo, Daniel Limo and Peter Kwalia were the other fellow countrymen who followed Barngetury and Maswai.
The pack also included Ethiopian athlete, Feyisa Woldemikael.
Before the 10 km reached at 30 minutes and 22 seconds, Kwalia dropped out from the pack. However, the pace was stable as it was from the start. The leading runners covered 15 km in a time of 45 minutes and 33 seconds, while no change was seen in the leading
group of runners. With a considerable consistency in the pace, the frontline runners showed a clear picture of the race record of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 44 seconds, in danger.
The halfway point was cleared by the leading runners in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 43 seconds. Kimaiyo was dropped out from contention, before the 30 km mark, which was covered in a time of 1 hour, 31 minutes and 20 seconds.
After a while, Woldemikael also faded away from the forefront. Komen and Limo, as the leading runners ran toe-to-toe for a while, until Komen engrossed a fast-paced attack over his rival Limo, for a clear approach towards the finish line.
As the 35 km mark cleared in 1 hour, 45 minutes and 47 seconds, Komen now just had to fight for the race record. The 34-year-old athlete adhered to a consistently increasing pace and covered the two loop race in a magnificent 2 hours, 7 minutes and 12 seconds.
Securing the top spot, Komen also attained a personal best and race record. The second spot was clinched by Limo, as he managed to clear the distance in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 38 seconds. He was followed by Kimaiyo, who secured third place in a decent time
of 2 hour, 10 minutes and 43 seconds.
