Boston Red Sox continued their stunning form by securing a comfortable 4-1 win against the San Diego Padres at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday, June 2 in the opening game of their three-match series of the 2013
Major League Baseball regular season.
Starting pitcher, John Lackey, posted another fine performance as he allowed just six hits and one run in eight solid innings to claim his sixth win of the season. Striking out batters at regular intervals and using his sliders
to great effect, he played a key role in deciding the outcome of the contest. Relief pitcher Koji Uehara also made his presence felt as he tossed up the perfect ninth to help the Red Sox hold on to their slim lead.
"I'm healthy," Lackey said after pitching eight strong innings for Boston in a 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. "I've been locating the ball pretty good, but it has happened before, you know."
"He's been a good pitcher for a long time," Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. "It's just a matter of being healthy, having a feel, having the velocity back. And that's what he's doing."
"I'm just having a good time pitching," Lackey said. "I'm not really worried about what slack I need to pick up or any of that. I missed a full season. I'm enjoying feeling good and enjoying competing."
Brandon Snyder doubled to deep centre in the fourth innings to break the deadlock and put his side on the board. Shortstop Jose Iglesias also made a valuable contribution as he singled to centre in the sixth to stretch the lead
to 4-0.
The running season has turned out to be an impressive one for the Red Sox, who finished at the bottom of the American League East Division standings table. A lot of credit should be given to the new Manager John Farrell for using
his resources to perfection. Red Sox improved their record to 51—34 to consolidate their position at the top of AL East standings table. It will be interesting to see if they grab another memorable series sweep in front of their home crowd.
