John M. Oxx scratches Akeed Mofeed from the Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket
John M. Oxx disappointed the punters and the bookmakers with his decision of scratching Akeed Mofeed from the Qipco 2,000 Guineas which is scheduled to take place at Newmarket on 5th May, 2012.
Akeed Mofeed, the three-year-old colt owned by Jaber Abdullah, was gaining popularity in the market for this mega event, but it was Oxx’s decision to take him out of the running.
Coral had given him odds of 9 to 1 for his opening race of the season.
He told the press that "Akeed Mofeed took a lame step yesterday and is going to have to have an easy week.
"We had been planning to run him in the Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday, but he won't be running and he will also miss the Guineas as we wanted to run him over a mile before making a decision about Newmarket."
The son of Dubawi, out of mare Wonder Why, triumphed in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund 2yo (C & G) Maiden at Leopardstown on 3rd
September, 2011.
Mounted by J. Murtagh, he raced with the odds of 11 to 4, and defeated race favourite, Athens, by an immense margin of 5 lengths.
This spectacular victory earned him the status of race favourite in the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes (Group 2) at Curragh on 25th September, 2011.
Ridden again by J. Murtagh, he had a 5-6 chance of winning, but fell slightly short as he narrowly missed the victory by ½ a length to the A. P O'Brien trained David Livingston.
John Oxx confirmed to the press that the young runner will race again this season. He stated that if he is fit and in form, he will be racing at Leopardstown in May for the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial.
Akeed Mofeed has shown immense potential in the few races that he has participated in. It is disappointing that he will not be competing at Newmarket, but reassuring that he will be available to race at Leopardstown.
He started his career with a solid fourth place finish among thirteen runners in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden at Leopardstown on 4thAugust, 2011.
